All workers in engaged in general, legal, public interest, and financial offices.
Office workers make up a large proportion of IWW membership in the British Isles. Our members work in a diverse range of settings including charities, legal firms, local government and finance. Our members also have a wide range of jobs in this sector, including administrators, technicians, cleaners and accountants.
It is an area which is broad in scope and working conditions vary widely. ‘City boys’ and senior management rake in six-figure salaries, whereas temps and cleaners barely scrape minimum wage for their long hours and hard work. Even charities, supposedly favouring equality and justice, relentlessly squeeze their workers to undertake massive workloads while at the same time emotionally blackmailing them into accepting pitifully low pay and short-term contracts.
Subcontracting in this sector is rife, with cowboy agencies ripping off temporary and contracted workers and undermining the unity of workers at their workplace. The IWW actively looks to organise agency workers, standing firm against these practices, and fights to unite agency and permanent staff into One Big Union. Only unity of action and the grassroots militancy that only the IWW has the guts to provide will build a better future in this sector. Sign up and get involved today!
